09/15/2005 Trucks travel down to Ocean City, Miss., Washington's newly adopted town, to bring supplies and donations to the Gulf Coast region. Ocean Springs Mayor Connie Moran seems to agree. She could not be reached this week for comment because of irregular phone service in Mississippi, but told The Clarion-Ledger out of Jackson, Miss., on Sept. 6 that the town felt "forgotten" in Katrina's aftermath. Residents have started to slowly trickle back into their neighborhoods only to find all their possessions ruined and cars flooded. According to Mississippi news reports, 30 percent of Ocean Springs homes are destroyed. www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=15210462&BRD=1091&PAG=461&dept_id=425686&rfi=6

www.wtfd.org/eventspress/2005/sept/collection.htmPlease join the Robbinsville Community Relief Effort to aid the victims of Hurricane Katrina. This is a community-wide effort encompassing our Township Officials, schools, Police and Fire department, seniors, local businesses, and several other groups in our community. We have “adopted” the town of Ocean Springs, Mississippi. The community is comparable in size to Robbinsville and has suffered substantial damages from Katrina. Bohren’s United Van Lines has graciously offered to supply the trucks and drivers for the relief effort. These items will be driven directly to Ocean Springs. Our goal is to collect items of need and ship them to Ocean Springs, Mississippi as soon as possible. We have been in touch with Ocean Springs Township Officials, School Officials and a number of residents who gave us some insight as to what items are needed. Promises of aid met with hope, doubt in Mississippi But some 20 miles away, at the Castaways bar in Ocean Springs, folks were grateful for any mention. "He's really interested about Mississippi," concluded Joe E. Fairley Jr., who lost his apartment and is now living with friends. "We've never had a president come down here like that," the disabled ex-construction worker said. "It's the first time a president has really shown an interest in this state." About 80 people gathered at the bar, where the owner had advertised the speech on a sign. Most listened quietly at the start, then resumed their conversations. Afterward, few were eager to blame their problems on the president. www.tcpalm.com/tcp/wptv/article/0,2547,TCP_1213_4085645,00.html

Surge gauge was maxed out Research tool damaged, 'did job perfectly' By DAVID TORTORANO www.sunherald.com/mld/sunherald/business/12668810.htmOCEAN SPRINGS - A piece of equipment that gauges storm surge reached its top measurement of just over 13 feet when Hurricane Katrina put it out of commission. The tide and water level station at the Gulf Coast Research Lab pier recorded a surge of 13.26 feet Aug. 29. It was the highest observed water level of nearly two dozen such stations spanning the coast from Texas to Florida.

NORMAL IS NOT POSSIBLE www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/N18219389.htmEvidence of the death and destruction is nearly everywhere across coastal Mississippi, where whole neighborhoods were obliterated. Military helicopters fly overhead while jeeps patrol the streets. White sand beaches that once draw tourists are now closed off with razor wire and armed guards. Neighbors in Ocean Springs were numbed by news that 19 bodies were found in a local golf course community. Nearby, four crosses stand as a memorial to a husband and wife, daughter and 3-year-old granddaughter who died there when Katrina struck. www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/N18219389.htm
